The making of a bilge stringer.
Our carpenter Matthias was working on the last portside bilge stringer that we have installed last week. All our bilge stringers have nibbed scarfed joints and like the whole piece the joint needs to be cut at the right angle to fit the mating piece.
Additionally, the back of the stringer is shaped to fit the curve of the frames underneath to avoid gaps and potential frame failure.---The rebuilt of Hawila would not be possible without people like you believing in us!If you have the means to support us financially visit our donation page via the link in our bio.

The Hawila Shipyard.
The best thing is to share news with friends!
So thank you to everyone who joined us at our event last week, where you had the chance to taste @atinkana_kaffee 's windsailed coffee (a souvenir from Switzerland) and we told you about the future plans of our project.Those who follow our newsletter will already know that we were allocated a piece of land by the Holbæk harbour master earlier this year. On these 1500 square metres, we can develop our shipbuilding project over the next 3 years. Since we have to go ashore for the more advanced work on the ship, this is an absolutely fantastic opportunity!
On land we will be able to work on the stern arch, the bottom frames and finish planking, but also open the yard for locals and projects around the ship. We dream of a place where we can offer intergenerational workshops, tours on our ship and cultural events.
Together with architect Henrik Valeur we have already developed many ideas for the design and are excited about such an opportunity. Our ship is now a few metres from the land and the next step would be to build a berth and crane the ship out.Unfortunately, we have to realise that we do not have the financial means to take this next step.
Therefore, the boatbuilding team will take a break and the office team will continue to work on strategies to solve the financial situation. After all rebuilding a wooden ship suitable for cargo, the high seas as well as becoming an example of fair and sustainable maritime transport are ambitious goals that require a lot of strength and stamina. Since we got back from the Christmas holidays, we

Since we got back from the Christmas holidays, we have been focusing on the rest of the work in the stern, meaning finishing the last frames and stanchions.
We have also added more bilge stringers to the bow and stern. They are strengthening the inside of the ship more and more, thus providing more stability. But before the stringers can be embedded in the hull, we have to start a longer process. The procedure is known as steam bending and it is the process of using steam to soften wood until it is pliable enough to bend.
The wood's lignans, polymers that hold the cellulose fibres together in the wood, become softer when steam is infused into it. The lignans harden once more as the wood cools, maintaining its bent shape.
The timber, in length up to 10 m, is hung in a plastic cover and dusted with hot steam for about five to six hours using 3 boilers. As soon as the time is right, the team gathers and everything has to happen very quickly before the wood has cooled down again. The stringer is pressed into place with all its might and fastened with clamps. A busy week has come to an end with lots of progress on the framing work on the ship and a successful event in Copenhagen yesterday.In preparation for the event, our volunteers put all their heart and creativity into crafting little maritime-inspired gifts for guests to win in our raffle. Part of the event was also a lino print workshop with the designs made by our volunteers in the summer. Framing Hawila's sternInitially, we had planned to keep Hawila’s stern intact as it appeared healthy and had received massive work in the 90s. However, things are not always as they appear on wooden ships, and while trying to fit our beam shelves aft we realised the poor condition of the upper stern frames particularly. To make a good connection we now have to replace the stern frames which means nearly the entire ship’s timber will be replaced.After removing the poop deck, we dismantled the whole stern area in the last few weeks.
Currently, our team removes the old frames by templating the hull shape and finding a suitable piece of oak from our timber supply. We also check to ensure that we have the desired grain in the wood ensuring strength. We then can mark the contour of the frame as well as the edge angles on the fresh timber piece before cutting.We use a chainsaw mounted on a jig allowing us to change slowly the cut angles along the frame cut line. The cutting process is done by a team of two: one pulling the jig and following the cut line, the other adjusting the angle along the way. After that, the final frame surface is planed more precisely according to the same angles reported on the template. Celebrating friendships!Following the annual sail cargo alliance meeting hosted by @newdawntraders in Cornwall, England, our team decided to pass by our friends and partners in the Netherlands on the way back to Denmark. Our busy schedule brought us to Amsterdam, Harlingen and Den Helder.We visited @sailcargo and admired their new ship Vega, wished fair winds to Giulia from @fairwinds_food_network on her journey across the Atlantic with @schoolatsea, had a great time with our friends at @fairtransport.shipping and their flagship Tres Hombres and finally also met with @kaapkoffie and their ship Ide Min.It's always a pleasure to connect with other sail cargo projects, especially if you consider them friends and future partners, and remind us of the common goal: to offer an ethical and green transport alternative!

Wednesday is farming day!Since our refit started in 2020, we have collaborated with the organic farming collective @svanholmgods.
In exchange for a day of work on the field, we receive their organic, seasonal vegetables, which we turn into healthy meals for our team. Svanholm Gods was established in the 1970s with common ideals concerning ecology, income sharing, communal living, and self-government.

Fitting our new bilge stringers!In the last weeks, our team put six new bilge stringers to add strength and stiffness to the hull.
For each one, we follow the same procedure: The first step is to create a template and transfer it to the carefully selected piece of oak, which we shape into form with circular saws, planers and sanders. Then our team uses a mix of linseed oil, tar and chalk to seal the gaps between the bilge stringer and frames. There is this group, these boats, our flashy orange costumes and the wind as the answer to all planning.
There have been islands, lighthouses, rocks, cliffs, forests, the best skies and never disappointing sunsets and moonrises.
A lot of new vocabulary, new birds, new knots, new balancing exercises, new harbours, new delicious recipes.
There have been night-watches, teas and nuts with or without raisins, lukewarm hot chocolate with seawater and algae for miles and miles.
Rolling cables, coiling ropes.
Sea shanties, word games.
Gabo, cargos, mosquitos.
Looking out, observing, looking out, observing and a bit more observing. Being ready, doing what needs to be done. Practicality meets contemplation. There is time, and it’s stretching perception.
Togetherness and the whole spectrum of challenges from tiring to energising.
There have been windless sea days and way too windy performance days. Feeling small in all that we can't control.
There have been many hands. Doing many things.
Restless chest, shaky ankle and constantly balancing body.

Chisels, hammers and brushes help with the finishing touches and one by one the last futtock frames amidships find their new spot in the hull.A new bunch of motivated volunteers have arrived in Holbæk and with their arrival starts a busy period here at the refit of Hawila.

Last week at Hawila a small group of us returned from sailing, cycling, and holidaying to welcome @underombygning2022, a collective of non-binary, trans, and female tradespeople/construction workers for the week.The collective meets once per month in a social setting to provide a space for gender minorities to network and share experiences. Annually they come together for 5 days to work on a shared project, interspersed with workshops and talks. This year they chose Hawila Project to be the setting for their 3rd annual gathering.The task at hand was to create two floating platforms for Hawila and the National Museum to share to enable working on the outside of the ships from the water, something that is safer and more versatile than working from a dinghy. It was decided that it must be possible for these two platforms to be lashed together with the flexibility to create the area needed to work but also that they can be transformed into a space for fun and creativity. Alongside this main project, a smaller group chose to help with work on Hawila’s rigging led by our rigging team Johanna and Liesbeth.With over 30 participants our volunteer house would have been beyond capacity, so @kystlivholbaek kindly donated the use of their space to the collective for the week which became a hub of activity. The aim was to create a working environment where each person had the freedom to exercise their skills or choose to learn new ones.At Hawila we are honoured they chose us for their annual gathering this year and we want to thank each participant for sharing their talent, skills and experiences with us!

The last 6 weeks that we have shared with the artists and technical crew behind the production of "RIPPLES - the sailing circus show" were very special.
We were part of their creative processes up close and saw Swallow being slowly transformed into a unique stage, a cosy home and now only wind-powered transport vessel. Yesterday morning the crew on board Swallow and Yggrasil left Holbæk Harbour to set sail to the first stop of their tour in Finland.
